Last week I was lucky enough to meet with the Director of Marketing for the Frisco RoughRiders, Krystin King. During our meeting not only did I learn more about social media marketing, but I learned about marketing as a whole.

We first talked about the RoughRiders's social media presence and how they use it to promote their games and events to different groups. She said that their main target audience is the normal suburban family, so on their social media they post fun content that will be engaging to young kids. Other times they will post about promotions like happy hour and 1 dollar drinks to draw in the young adult audience, which is one of their smalleconsumerr bases.

Beyond social media I got to learn more about the RoughRider's advertising, including theme nights and collaberations with other organizations. Theme Nights are as the name suggests, and are a great way to draw in more fans and drive ticket sales up. For instance recently they had a Dallas Stars theme night. Using other sports organizations is a common theme because it brings a new fan base while not taking away any fans because they aren't direct competitors.

After the meeting, and learning about the entirety of the RoughRider's marketing activities started to change my thoughts about my ISM topic. Originally I wanted to focus on social media marketing but now I am thinking about switching my topic to general marketing, with a focus on sports marketing. The field of sports marketing is something that I won't get board with and had a wider array of applications than pure social media marketing.
